Pre-Conference Sessions
Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP) Workshop
Carol Ptak and Chad Smith, authors of Orlicky’s Material Requirements Planning,
Third Revised Edition, (McGraw-Hill, 2011) will offer an in-depth exploration of
the logic behind the innovative and groundbreaking multi-echelon inventory and materials
planning and execution method known as Demand Driven MRP.
The workshop will describe and clarify the poor business results embedded in most
of today’s demand and supply planning systems; discusses the core problems causing
the results; presents and details an alternative demand driven structure for planning
and controlling materials flow; and presents initial results from actual implementations.
This new solution helps companies tackle three pervasive 21st Century problems:
unacceptable inventory performance; unacceptable service level performance; and
high related expenses and waste.
The workshop is divided into two sections.
Section 1, MRP in the Modern World, answers four critical questions:
- Is MRP still relevant?
- Is MRP failing because it is flawed or poorly implemented?
- Why do pull oriented philosophies like Lean come into conflict with MRP?
- Why has MRP failed to significantly evolve over the last 30 years?
Section 2, Demand Driven MRP details the blueprint for the evolution of MRP in the
modern world. The five critical components of DDMRP will be detailed:
- Inventory Positioning
- Buffer Profiles and Level Determination
- Dynamic Buffers
- Demand Driven Planning
- Highly Visible and Collaborative Execution
Attendees will receive an autographed copy of the book. There is a
$450 charge per
person to attend this day long session. You do not have to attend the CMUC
in order to attend this Pre-Conference event.
Throughput Improvement Simulation™
This experiential simulation helps managers and employees learn about throughput
improvement techniques and then allow them to experience the results by applying
these methods in a simulated manufacturing plant and supply chain. By the end of
the TIS attendees will have experienced the implementation of practical and effective
throughput improvement techniques. One major highlight of the TIS is that participants
will actually see and experience the difference between a LEAN manufacturing implementation
and Drum-Buffer-Rope implementation and will have an insight on how to apply both
without compromise. Attendees who enroll in this workshop must attend the full session
running from 8:00-5:00 on Wednesday. Pre-enrollment is required, see registration
form. Registration is limited to 18 participants per session and is on a first come,
first served basis. There is a
$350 charge per person to attend the TIS.
Measurement Nightmare Workshop
Attendees will be provided with an explanation of the evolution of TOC from the
initial production solution to a series of solution sets dealing with distribution,
project management external constraints and strategic decision making. Participants
will learn about the Throughput World and how this approach often results in a chronic
conflict with traditional Cost World systems and beliefs. Learn a process for exposing
conflicting policies, measures and work practices and how to generate win-win solutions
for both the organization and its individuals. Leave with an innovative, yet practical,
business solution for maximizing the ROI equation in your company. This session
is a must for senior leaders. There is a
$350 charge per person to attend
this day long session.

Keynote Address
Erik Bush – Pushing the World Into Pull
Erik Bush recently retired from IBM after 31 years of experience with the company,
the majority of which have been in management and executive positions. More recently,
as the executive responsible for the IBM’s GBS Global Delivery Centers, Erik lead
the implementation of sweeping changes which resulted in improved client service
and substantially enhanced capabilities. The GBS global delivery network grew from
15,000 staff to over 40,000 during his tenure. The growth rate of these capabilities
eclipsed that of all major competitors during this period.
While at IBM Erik introduced and invested in TOC principles that produced innovative
and groundbreaking applications of TOC within Service based industries.
Erik is now leading a technology start-up aimed at proliferating the demand driven
principles behind TOC throughout the industrial world.

Breakout Sessions
Replenishment+®
REPLENISHMENT+® (R+®) is a best of breed multi-echelon materials and inventory
management software designed to facilitate a demand pull inventory system consistent
with the methodology known as Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP) and Actively Synchronized
Replenishment (ASR), an application of the Theory of Constraints. It is the only
fully compliant DDMRP and ASR software in the world.
DBR+™
DBR+™ is a powerful tool to bring the methodology into real-time reality.
Through proprietary design, DBR+™ allows users to easily MODEL, SCHEDULE and
then easily EXECUTE through a real-time, user friendly web-based format. Additionally,
reporting formats easily facilitate multiple types of CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT activities.
Demand Driven MRP (DDMRP)
Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning is an innovative multi-echelon pull
methodology to plan inventories and materials. It enables a company to build more
closely to actual market requirements and promotes better and quicker decisions
and actions at the planning and execution level. DDMRP is a central component of
the new book, Orlicky’s Material Requirements Planning, Third Revised Edition.
The New Demand Driven Metrics Suite
See a simple but elegant set of global and local metrics that every manufacturing
company should rely on and every employee can connect to their everyday actions.
This set of metrics is featured in The Theory of Constraints Handbook, McGraw-Hill,
2010, Chapter 14.
Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM)
Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) is the newest and most effective way to
synchronize and maximize the use of resources in project environments. Attendees
will learn a revolutionary technique for planning and executing in a single or multi
project environment. If your company has a limitation in project management or engineering
CCPM is a good place to start with constraints management methodology.
Demand Driven MRP in ETO and Pure MTO Environments
The concept of Demand Driven MRP incorporates new tactics for planning and execution
for all types of environments. New research has revealed a powerful application
for the concept in Make to Order (MTO) and Engineer to Order (ETO) companies that
suffer from materials planning and synchronization challenges.
Integrating TOC, Lean and Six Sigma
Sustainable continuous improvement requires a combination of TOC, Lean, and Six
Sigma methodologies. This presentation presents a case study of how one company
combined all three bodies of knowledge to compress improvement timelines, double
productivity, and generate a market offer. For organizations that desire similar
results, a process improvement model is proposed that will establish which methodologies
to apply at the appropriate level in the organization.
Introduction to Drum Buffer Rope
In 1984, the book The Goal introduced a common sense, but unconventional way to
look at maximizing the performance of a manufacturing environment through a scheduling
process called Drum-Buffer- Rope. If your organization has difficulty producing
a stable, realistic and reliable schedule that maximizes total production throughput,
this session is a must.
Strategic Solutions Refresher
The Thinking Processes behind the Theory of Constraints are one of the most critical
and underappreciated aspects of the methodology. This interactive session is designed
for Jonahs to share the successes and obstacles they have faced in working with
the Thinking Processes in their respective environments. This session will be led
by Chad Smith.
